straightening
Prior to many steps (gunwale installation and all interior
locker and seat cleats) it's important to straighten
the boat first.

To do that I like to drop a temporary, trapezoid-shaped former
into the center of the boat (if you built my way you have a few
of these still hanging around), on a layout line (so it's at
right angles to the long centerline of the boat).

That trapezoid (not shown in this photo) gives you something to
sight to. The transom will seldom be square. To hold it square,
run a come-along from stem to the long end of the tweaked transom,
and fiddle with it until the rear end is square to the long
axis of the boat again. Then install the various seat cleats, locker
partitions, etc. By the time you get all those parts glued in place,
then the boat will stay square. On the other hand, if you glue
that stuff in to a boat still out of square, you'll end up with a
permanently crooked boat. I've seen a few like that. They still row
just fine. But looking at a boat like that makes you feel like you
spent too much time at the bar.
