H and L Variant
Richard had a nice historical twist on this fly.
Richard thought it was invented by a northern Colorado
fly tier whose name he couldn't remember. The fly
got popular after a newspaper reported it was Dwight
Eisenhower's favorite fly. But it turned out someone
had actually tradmarked the name House and Lot.
And who ever that was tried to extort a kickback from
all the shops that sold the fly. So, according to Richard,
everybody just changed the name to H and L Variant.
Richard also pointed out that most manufacturers tie this
fly as if it was just another color variation on the standard
Wulff fly pattern.
But the H&L Variant is a variant, which means it is supposed
to have extra long tails and wings for its given hook size.
I know Pat Barnes used to tie his H&L Variants that way too.
Richard ties the quill body with stripped Peacock Quills.
He soaks a Peacock eye in a mild bleach solution, which makes
it easier to strip off the green fibers, leaving only a
slightly bleached quill to work with. Richard said even slightly
bleached quills can be a bit brittle, however, so he soaks the quills
a second time--in bowl of water--on tying day. That way they're soft and supple
long enough to make the fly.
