Field shots that magnify beyond 1 to 1 are tough without specialized flash equipment. When I put a closeup ring behind a Nikor105 Macro lense I can get a tantalizing amount of magnification. But to get the required depth of field (F22) I end up hand holding at 1/60th of second at asa 400. Which leads to blurry photos like this one. I haven't tried pushing the virtual film speed beyond that yet. But they do make specialized closeup flashes, complete with light diffusion lenses, so you don't get hard shadows. I need to get one of those soon, so I don't end up making more photos like this one (of a #22 Blue Winged Olive, maybe 3/16" long).
With that rig (a closeup ring behind a 105macro lense) you can blow up little itty bitty bugs a lot more than this. But you will need a diffused flash.
