Foam Crawfish
Here's a new way to make a soft, open-cell foam crayfish.
This fly still needs some work: the proportions aren't right yet.
But this is a promising new technique. Among my local
Montana Rivers, like the lower Madison, Jefferson, Ruby, Big Hole, Yellowstone
Beaverhead and Missouri........crayfish are a big deal. And this is the first
soft crayfish I've come up with that's fast and easy to tie.
Fish do bite these things and hang on, rather spitting them out right away.
I've been fishing them for several years now, but the way I used to make
them was too slow and time consuming for practical use. This one's fast
and easy to make.
....it'll start to look better soon. I've just got to work with it a little.
To make it I wrap a horizontal needle with spawn sack, and then wind on
some rubber legs and hackle. Then I split the front half of an open-cell
foam body blank. Then I pull the needle out of the vise and stab it into the
crux of the half-split body blank. Then I wind backwards dimpling the foam
in a few places, whip finish and then lash it onto a hook. Weight can be added
(in an earlier step) by wrapping the spawn sack with wire, just prior to winding the hackle.
I'll make some step-by-step photos once I get all the kinks worked out.
