The sky is the limit on this stuff, here is a link to a sail rigging site if you felt the need to drop a couple hundred dollars on a pulley you could it here. They do have some moderately priced stuff that looks a little sharper that the Duckworks stuff.

Just below the handle is a right at 2" tapering to 1 1/2" just above the bade. They are 8.5 foot long. I got the length be contacting Jason at MBB and got his recommendation and the are perfect length.
Im thinking about building another set and making the shaft out if ash inboard of the locks and spruce outside. I think they would balance beautifully. Not worth wasting fishing

Speaking of pumps I ended up ditching mine half way through the project and ended up using the graduations on the side of the cups for big batches. For small batches I ended up using large syringes from the ranch supply store. I just marked one "hardener" the other "resin". When they got to gummed up I pitched em and used a fresh set. At less than a buck apiece they worked

Mike, I ended up using a pair of the Southco Latches on each hatch and no hinge at all. I put weather strip under the edges. I just set the lid over the hatch opening and click both latches down. It is rock solid when its on and the lid comes completely off when they are released.
Just another option that worked well for me. I hope I explained it well if not let me know and Ill take some

Thanks guys. I'll get some more detailed pics posted this weekend. I just figured out how to reduce the file size down to get them posted.
I live in Gillette, WY. We refer to it as the middle of nowhere, in the center of everything. Its in the northeast corner of Wyoming. Grey Reef is about 2.5 hours to the dam and the Bighorn is about 3 hrs to 3 Mile. So there is nothing close (oth

Well here she is. My Freestone Skiff built from plans by Montana Boat Builders. Although she doesn't have the lines of a classic drift boat, I love her the same. It turned out better than I could have hoped. I am my own worst critic so there will always be a few things that I notice but over all it looks great. And rows even better! I floated the Grey reef section of the North Platte l

The guy at Raka talked my into buying a lamination roller when I bought my glass and epoxy. Picture a small paint roller made out of aluminum with deep groves milled into it. At first I though "ok it may make it easier" I found it to be very helpful. It pushes the glass into the wet epoxy while still allowing air out through the fabric and not pulling it around.
Just a tip. Pl

Hey Mike looking good!
Ive tried sending you a few PM's but the keep getting rejected. Ive been pulling my boat around on an 8'x8' snowmobile trailer. It works, but I need something else. I could build one however, I have access to a welding shop full of college students looking for projects! What is the material cost for a trailer like the one you built? If I am understand

Thanks Mike
I had been looking for those too. I assumed you were looking for the rubber draw latches. I just placed my order for a few of these too. All I have left to do on my boat is put the hardware on. If I had it all in hand, Id be a few hours from completion. Next week I will take her on the first river trip. I think the first outing may be to the local fishing lake with my 3 year o

I hope so. It was part of the material list in the plans I bought from Jason at Montana Boat Builders, but then the plans never referenced it. I e-mailed Jason and he explained how to use it. I did use it primarily in non-structural application, such as the between the side decks and the hull, where I wanted a good looking filler or as a fairing compound. Adding it to the Resin makes it much

When I ordered from Raka I purchased (at their recommendation) a couple ounces of fumed silicon to use as a filler. the stuff was amazing. When I got the order the silicon was like a cloud in a bag! The couple ounces I ordered filled about a two gallon bag. When you pulled out a handful you didnt even know it was in your hand. Anyway, it was great it really made a smooth compound for fillets

I think Im following you. Ill just go over the process I would use. 1. Fiberglass the bottom and side panels. first coat on the bare wood then add the glass cloth and fill the weave 2. Join them together and fillet the inside. 3. Glass over the fillet 4.Flip the boat over and glass the outside of the chines as well as the bow and transom. 5. make sure all the glass tape is filled and faired ou

Its been finals week for me so Ive been busy writing papers and studying. My boat is at the Vortex Liner guy, he had a few set back and wont get to it till Wednesday. Thats a good thing, it would be hard as hell doing what I should be doing (writing and studying) when its 60 degrees and I have a boat that is about 4 days of work away from being DONE! Tomorrow is the deadline for my last paper a

Tomorrow morning Im getting the liner sprayed on the bottom of the boat. With this being finals week I was too busy writing papers and didnt plan far enough ahead.
I need to install the pulley block on the floor for the anchor system as well as the foot brace pieces. The hull is 1/2" thick baltic birch plywood. Do you think screws from the inside would be strong enough. My other tho

Ok, I must confess Ive only rowed with oar locks a couple of times in rented boats. My last boat was a 15' cataraft I build and I used pins and clips.... (pause for sneers).... they works well for the intended purpose. I wanted to be able to have anyone row it pins and clips are a little more beginner friendly and I didnt want to be stuck at the oars all day everyday because I was the only

I just used a straight cut bit, I think it was a 1/2" diameter.
Im not in a big hurry to get the wrap done so I can look around a bit more for black rope. I just picked up a 100' of 1/4" Poly/nylon braided rope at Home Depot today. I figured would use it to make sure it was the right size and Id keep looking for black once I confirmed the size was right. I even thought abou

Here are a few pics of the finished product.
A few ponderings I wanted some input on. First, I've got the appointment with the Vortex Dealer to spray the bottom of my boat, he is gonna do the oars blades too. I just cant decide if I want to do just the edges or to do the entire blade with black Vortex Liner. I think doing the whole blade would make it all but bullet proof and still loo

Every once in a while I just get an "ah ha" moment. Eventually the ideas in my head churn around long enough and things fall into place. When I started my boat build I wanted to build the oars too. First reason was because I just wanted too and the second (and perhaps more compelling) was because shelling out a few hundred dollars for a set of oars seemed a little painful. I tried s

Okay, here are the long promised pics and an update. Ive got just about everything built. The gunnels are on, the inside is lined with Grizzly Grip (a product I was very satisfied with), the seats are made. Tonight im gonna attach the trim pieces to the side decks and rod trays (they are just dry fitted in the pics) All I have left to do is cut out the hatch access on the side decks and build

If no one objects I thought we could have a little fun with this post. As I have been building I have noticed that I have developed a particular thoughts that are pretty unique to boat building, I thought I share a few and see what others can add.
You might be a boat builder if....

Well I took a bunch of pics to post for a progress report. But when I got home I found out the files were too big to upload. After seeing the pics at the start of this thread I realized just how far I have come and how long it is been since I updated. Ill get some lower resolution pics tonight and get them posted ASAP.

Thanks for the help guys. I rolled on two coats today. I got a fine texture and if I look close I can see some of the imperfections I know are there. But I was surprised to get done with the second coat and discovered I should have enough to do a third coat. I think the third coat should take care of those. Like Bill said Im sure there will still be things I noticed but over all its looking

Tomorrow Im rolling on the bedliner (GrizzlyGrip Brand) to the inside of my boat. Ive never worked with the stuff before and have a question. How forgiving is the stuff as far filling and fairing minor flaws? What Im talking about is where the biaxal tape meets the floor. Ive got it faded in pretty well but if I run my hand over it I can feel the transition and there is the occasional stray gl

Greetings everyone. I've been away for awhile because I have been boat building and it has been going too smooth to get away from. Ive got all the panels glassed and stitched together, so its looking like a boat. But, Ive ran into a small problem.... I taped the inside of the chines, and turned it over to do the outside of the chines, and found out I was about 10 foot short of having eno

Glade to hear that Scott. I think I'm gonna try going that route and see how they turn out. The one thing I cant figure out about them is the size. How is their surface area compared to a normal oar? If you wouldn't mind could you send me the blade dimensions to give me a starting point?

Well after wrestling it over for months in my head I have changed my mind yet again and will be building MBB's Free Stone Skiff. In fact the plans arrived yesterday so I an stoked to get going. As I go over the spread sheet I made to forecast and keep track of costs I keep coming to the line for oars and get a lump in my throat seeing the price. I have scoured the internet and have found

The sales guy I talked to knew exactly what I needed when I told him what I was doing. He said I could order from them, but they were "a few" weeks out on orders because they don't stock anything, it all made to order. He refered me to Fiberlay.com and said they stock the product. What I have found searching all the sights for NIDAcora and Plascore is that you either pay for the
