Heres how she looked a couple days ago. Gunnel is pretty much done now. I sandwiched the core between 1/2" laminated Doug fir in the inside and 1" on the outside. Area where the oar locks are has another 1/2" on the outside.
I want to bolt through the gunnel for strength. Any tips on this? Anything I need to be careful of?

Thanks for your help Sandy. Damn that was alot of clamps, thank god harbor freight had 3.5" C clamps on sale, $2.50 a piece!!
Wet the boat and the wood, let it soak for a bit, troweled on some putty. Tightened till good started squeezing out and the stopped. I've read that epoxy likes some thickness to be strong Vs glue wants a tight joint

So far, bending is not an issue, found a couple clear Doug fir 4x4 at Lowe's, went through the whole pallet, but only one tiny knot in the two of them. Ripped to 1/4" They're 8 ft long. Boat is about 13ft. Overlapping them on every layer

I get the thickest gloves at harbor freight, $6 for 100.
Sandy, do you use thickened epoxy after wetting out?
Seems like that makes more sense so the glue stays in place.

Boat building has been slow this summer. Not a stand still, but alittle done every couple weeks. Fishing has been to good.
So how do you guys do it? Seems like thickened epoxy is the way to go. Wet out the wood strip and gunnel area on the boat, then thickened epoxy, clamp it up. She's getting close!!

Catfish chasing streamers!? Eating it on the strip? Heard of it, never seen it. Bass are alot of fun. No one on the river! Amazing. For me that's right up there with catching a good fish.

Yup. Pretty cool how that concave dish actually ends up creating different amounts of rocker. I visualised it with rectangular pieces of paper before I started drawing the dish on my boat

Ok good, so in deep calm water the bottom shouldn't flex when standing to fish or walking in ghe boat, but alittle flex when sliding over a rock is ok? I've got front and rear hatches, fixed rowers bench, and a laminated gunnel, I don't think I'll have issues with flex when rowing, was mostly concerned about the floor

How much flex should I expect if the boat is done well? Alittle when sliding over rocks or should there be no flex?
I get you don't want any when rowing, but what is a reasonable amount?
Thank you.

Any chance it increases stability as you walk around the boat by engaging the water surface sooner?

So I needed more glass, looked at Raka's discount section and found some 14oz biaxial. Was using 17oz biaxial but they were out. This new stuff seems very supple compared to the 17oz, should be easier to work with I'm guessing. Anyone use this stuff? The 17oz wasn't that bad to work with, just have to take your time. I figured it's easier to take your time with one heavy layer

Damn. Good times! Glad the Dayak worked out so well. How much do you think the exessive side flare contributes to its stability?

You made the right choice. I'm using 1/2" myself and seems to be fine, but Sandy and others have discussed the merits of thicker plascore. Exponentially stiffer, insignificantly heavier.

Ha! Ann Arbor! Nice. Fun town. The Huron River flows through it. It's like the Missouri River below Holter damn, but for Small mouth (and carp if you're good).

Sandy, you lived in Michigan for a time, you get back and fish at all? Ok I'm going with 2 layers inside.
This things getting close!

Curious about the stress fiberglass takes inside and outside of the boat. I've read many threads about having more fiberglass outside, but is this mostly to protect against impact or is this where the most stress is put on the boat when rowing? What is the job of the fiberglass inside and outside of a fishing boat, not a white water boat?

So i glassed the bottom of the boat, front and back transoms, and most of one side, 3 layers of 17oz biaxial each.
Damn that was work!
What do you guys do about the sides? I've got epoxied floors now from all the drips, will there be enough epoxy left in the weave?
Anyways, called Raka to discuss amine blush and cleanup. They said with the medium hardener i used and the coolish temp

Thanks Sandy, very good info. I work at a hospital, grabbed a few syringes and some of the biggest needles i could find injecting worked magic.
I made sure the bubble firmed up a bit, teased open a small exhaust hole in the bubble with the needle, and then injected till it flowed out the exhaust hole.

So i did a pretty good job on my corners, but curious what the more experienced members do to get them covered correctly?
Also, have one area thats got a moderately sized bubble. Everything is still tacky so I'm gonna see if i can push it down or maybe inject it with some thickened epoxy.
Thoughts?

Got alittle sloppy with the putty, but that's why God made belt Sanders. Spent the day smoothing the edges, hopefully lay my chine seams and bottom fiberglass tomorrow. Gonna lay one layer of 17 Oz biaxial tape on the chine then overlap the three bottom layers on the chine also, side layers will also overlap the chine. For a total of 7 layers at the chine.
Seems to much to me, but if it d

Yes, all plascore. I'm pretty good with the belt sander I have made alot of furniture, use it often on table tops. So just to make sure, im gonna use it to break the edge on the plascore and smooth out the putty? Concerned that I'm not supposed to sand and round off the plascore. Maybe I'll just use a rasp/file. Just concerned about the plascore.

Well, biaxial is what I've got. Was on sale at Raka. It lays down really nice, not that I know the difference. First boat. I've got a couple of those slotted rollers you mentioned. Is the puttying on the finish layer or between layers. Was gonna do 2 layers inside and 3 outside. I'm not to worried about how polished the boat is going to look. Just want to get on the water.

Thanks Sandy, I've got a belt sander. Would that work?
The way i did it, the edge of the bottom panel sits in from the outside edge of the side panel by 1/4", i filled this and glued down with thickened epoxy after wetting out the edge.

Ok so the bottom is glued on to the boat, but now i have a hard edge at the chine. Do i need to remove this hard edge before glassing the chines and outside of the boat?
I used a sander and beveled off a piece of scrap plascore, worked pretty good, just curious if there is a right way to do this.

Ok, but i don't understand how the form doesn't move once the screws are taken out. I'm ready to epoxy my transoms on, then lay the top on it and weigh it down, once the epoxy dries and the bottom and ends are glued on, what keeps the boat in place once the screws come out? None of my panels are fiberglassed yet if that matters.
Also im just using 2x4 as temporary ribs. I'v
