I will be 67 in a couple of weeks. My boat didn't make on the water this year and it is 33% through an interior refinish. Then there all the tasks to do like cleanup the garage so I can get the boat inside where it is warm and dry. Round-to-its' take longer at our age!

That's a #14 DaiRiki 280. But you can make it as big as you want. It's just a Thunder Creek Minnow reborn with Flashabou instead of Deer Hair. Bill Blackburn ties them with soft turkey feathers. I forgot what you call those feathers. They do have a name.

You can purchase shrink-to-fit tubing in a size appropriate to fit the oar shaft. Heat and shrink and go!

I haven't tried it, but Brad Dimmock, a long time Colorado river guide places plastic sandwich bags in the oarlock socket. His claim is, no more squeaks. The need for this become obvious on multi-day desert river trips. Most lubricants draw sand which then increases the diameter of the socket or whatever is the softest.

As a tangential thought, why unload your cooler every night and reload it in the boat every day. Consider just "going shopping" with a bucket or bag and just take those items needed for the meal. On long river trips we used to mark the contents of every cooler and container with their contents. Every night a different group would make dinner and breakfast. They didn't have to know

For further consideration the grain of the oarlock blocks appears to be in line with the vertical shaft of the oarlock. It would seem that running the grain in a perpendicular orientation in regards to the oar lock's shaft would be stronger. Just a thought.

How would you install your oars. At the blade end of the oar is obviously a blade and at the selected location somewhere along the shaft will be oar stops to prevent the oar from sliding down and out of the oarlock. You could certainly install your oars on through these oarlocks prior to installing the oar stops. It however would be inconvenient and perhaps dangerous to have an oarlock that could

I rebuilt a Sawyer Oar that had rotted from moisture captured by the rubber boot. The tip of that oar was split about 4" up and contains a replacement chunk of steel/galvined 1/4" screen in an epoxy putty. The other oar of the pair has the same thing. I have no idea how old they are but they have suffered no damage and I suppose the the reinforcing could be used on other oars too. I pos

I wish I had an opportunity to row both of those boats. It would be interesting to compare the loaded McKenzie style 48"er to the Brigg's style in aluminum. Both boats left Corn creek with big loads. Sort of like a big backpack, the more space the more gear you put in it. I didn't get an opportunity to measure the Brigg's boat but it was very wide, I'll bet it was closer

I liked the book so much I sat down and finished it in a quick burst of reading. No more details on the design, however a lot more on the journeys it, Clancy Reese and Jon Barker undertook. I was riveted to my seat. It helps to have traveled many of the same paths or should I say waterways the trio traveled. Some of you may enjoy the exploits and adventures presented within the pages.

Wayne, I just got the book mentioned previously from our local library. It is a great story that I can relate to as I was also a riverguide and boatman at the same time as Clancy and Jon. I didn't fall as far down the rabbit hole as they did. I at least came back to town and ended up with real jobs. However the river still does call me!
