Sandy, I don’t know if you remember them or not. Or if they hadn’t been discovered yet back when you were a kid. The Shad are running and it is a supper recovery from the really poor harvests of the previous two-three yrs. it is a very early run and is exciting to see the excitement Of it. 1-5lbs are somewhat common with some big ole Bucks in the 5-10 lb size. My town, Easton, sponsors a tri-state fair of sorts and it’s a pretty big deal.

The Columbia River has a big run of Shad every year, last year was a record of 7,500,000! I have tried fly fishing for them but the wind was not in my favor. I have never seen one but I read that it is a fun fishery. Maybe 2021 with the Corona Virus situation here in Washington.

I grew up in Jersey (sort of anyway ).
I fished a lot but didn't know much about shad. I wish we had rock bass here

Rick Did you shad fish the Delaware? I've caught one and almost landed another on spinning gear. If you stay put and the water temp is at least 49-51 you can't miss. the problem is that they are in schools and they are either there or they are not. it could b hours or days until you see more. If you're in a school you'll catch many but I've not been so lucky. Remember that their mouths are like paper. their bodies are flat, their kinship is strong. Retrieve them slowly, very slowly, they use their body in the current to push away and their kin often surrounds them to try and figure out what is wrong and that makes them even more difficult to hook. Delicious. The huge Roe is also good.

Rock bass are fun. There are in allot of the local streams such as the Tohican, Little Lehigh and Jordan Creek. I like to eat my catches and summer Rock Bass are mushy:-(
In the end I'm still after Bluegill, Perch and Pickerel.

Don, I live in Washington State and have never been to the Deleware River, I think I would enjoy fishing it but at the present time my bank account and the government decree that I must stay home. We are under lockdown now and are required to shelter in place so fishing is out of the question. State Parks are closed and we are only allowed to get groceries and attend to the most critical of needs. However, in the states' infinite wisdom, you can visit one of your local marijuana stores and get your bicycle fixed. Most restaurants are closed and those that remain open can only offer take-away service. Grocery stores often have some groceries so you can buy some food.
